The Stuck-Up Do

I was feeling very down and cross yesterday, after some incredibly hateful remarks were made on this blog. I am glad to see that day is over and here we are with a new post! What could a girl do to cheer herself up? A fancy hair-do of course.
Sometimes I find that the only thing that keeps me sane through certain days is having a really fun coif. So I pulled out my hot sticks and went to work to remedy my foul mood.
One. I pulled the hair up to give it lots of volume and curled (most) of them under.
two. It basically looked like this, I dont think it needs to be fancy or well wrapped to pull this style.
three. I waited about an hour and pulled the sticks out, and looked like a lunatic! fun!
four. I wrapped all the hair into little rolls all over my head. I basically made a ton of small victory rolls.
I wore this hair to a kid's birthday party a few weeks back, its a great style if you will be running around and active, as its up and out of the way, but still vintagely stylish.
If you want more loopy, rolly, swirly hair inspiration you should check out Solanah's post featuring many of our favorite bloggers.

You look SO lovely. This might be my favorite style on you! I wonder if my hair is too long to try that...and what are those curler things? I am so hair challenged...I normally just wear mine straight.

Your hair looks great! I can not understand a person who would post a mean post on your blog, what is wrong with some people!?

Amazing hair, as always! I wish I could do that in my everyday life, but my hair just doesn't cooperate. It won't curl or do anything I'd like it to do!

And those hateful comments on your last post, I'd high-five you if I could! I don't like fur, real or not, it's just not my thing, but I wouldn't judge other people on it. That person who ranted, well... I just think if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Anyway, kudos to you Twila Jean! Love the blog, I always check out yours and Solanah's when you update :)

I -love- your hair, SO pretty and your victory rolls yesterday were perfection! If you haven't already, you can moderate comments that other people put on your blog and if you don't like what they have to say, their rude opinions won't appear! :) Don't allow someone's ugly words hurt your beautiful spirit. xoxo

Ms. Twila J,

You look lovely as usual. I don't think I will ever get to the point where I can do anything that fabulous with my hair! Still, seeing your do is inspiring.

As for yesterdays comments, I believe firmly that before we can champion kindness and ethical treatment toward other species, we must learn to afford the same to our own! I regret that some failed to see the larger picture which was the sentiment and love that you have for your Grandmother, and thus, one of her cherished garments. It was hurtful, imho, that posters glazed right past that. :(

I'm so glad your new do picked you up! I think you should go sit in your gorgeous kitchen with a cup of tea!

Hey, Twila....just read the comments on yesterday's post to see what the heck happened. Let me just say this: I got super stressed out after I had some people passing some pretty heated comments back and forth via my blog when I posted my own thoughts on Quentin Tarantino's film Inglorious Basterds a while back. At first, I thought, "okay, better never blog about controversial topics again." However, now I think: why completely avoid self-expression just because it may cause a little bit of controversy? In the end, despite the discomfort and discord, I think posting about controversial subjects is important, so I applaud you for not backing down or steering away from such subjects. Like Solanah noted, it's unfortunate when some people word their views in a way that is more personally attacking than logically argued. Still, I really value the idea that blogging can and should sometimes be a place where people can "talk" out their different opinions. 'Nuff said. Keep it up...you look gorgeous and I think you are one brave gal.

I know its just the light but your hair looks red here. Have you ever considered coloring it red? I think you would look great in it! As for the mean comments...there will always be people like that. It isn't worth your time to let it bother you. Easier said than done I know, but there will always be people willing to put you down for being you. Don't ever let them win by changing who you are.
PS-I love the hairstyle!!!!

I love! Do you have a photo of the back view? People sometimes forget I think how perfectly controlled the styles were. I'm in awe of your ability to tame any flyaway strays into that glam do!

Twila,

I'm an avid follower, but I read your last post after you had disabled your comments, so I just wanted to say a little something now. I'm sorry if you didn't want to hear anymore about it, feel free to delete my comment if thats the case.

I've been a vegan for 4 years (I'm 18), and feel very strongly about animal rights etc. So I will admit, when I first saw your post, I was a little... Grossed out? I can't think of the proper phrasing right now, it's far too early in the morning for me =)

However, I think that merely throwing such a coat out would be wasteful and almost disrespectful to the memory of the animal. It died for that coat a very long time ago, so in my opinion, why not wear it, and pass it on, so that the animal did nto die in vain for merely one fashion "season", and so that others don't have to die for new fur?

Personally, I wouldn't wear it, but that's just me. If you havn't purchased new fur, then I'm with you 100%. Why not get as much use out of it as you can?

Similarly, if I was turning newly vegan/vegetarian today, and had meat etc. in my freezer, I don't think I would be able to eat it, but I would give it to someone who would. Less demand, less production, less slaughter, even by a fractional amount =)

So I hope that made sense, as I said, it is the very early morning for me, and feel free to delete this comment if you don't want to think about it anymore.

And your hair is adorable, as usual. =)

So sorry about the drama over your Gran's fur! Makeup, a pretty dress and fab hair is a sure fire way to help a gal feel better about almost anything!

Beautiful hair style. I need a do like that for my work. Thanks for the great idea. I hope you feel better.

You and your perfectly pinned up hair! I think if i'm going to do anything with mine i'd have to cut it short..like 6-8 inches shorter. well...summer will be here soon (cross your fingers) maybe i'll try a short do then..and you can teach me how to do such amazing things with mine :) pretty please ;)

I'm sorry you had to put up with comments like that. People's opinions on fur should be like their opinions on religion - kept respectfully to themselves. "I wear fur" or "I don't wear fur" should be the extent we let ourselves go on about it - it's quite obviously a volatile topic, but being passionate about something doesn't give you the right to rudely push your opinions on others. I feel like I'll have to put a disclaimer at the end of outfit post where I wear fur now to avoid such a conflict :/

In a lighter vein, that hairstyle looks lovely! I need something that's controlled like that for walking through the many wind tunnels at my uni, and this looks just about right. I may give it a go when I have time!

I think all of the energy people put into making hateful comments about vintage fur could be aimed at the fur industry, today.
Also, your hair looks amazing.

love the look! and i totally get what you mean about how to fix a bad day- it seems like when i feel the crappiest, i dress up in my gaudiest outfit haha. I guess i'm creating a persona for myself than just putting on clothes. i don't know...

You look lovely! Dont let the haters stop you wearing vintage fur. I think people forget that in the past, fur just used to be a by product and the meat would be sold in the butchers. They didnt waste anything or take it for granted.

Man, I seriously need to get my ass into gear, phone the salon and book a haircut so it's actually possible to style my hair! I have an insane amount of hair, and at its current length it's totally unweildy.

Gorgeous locks (and as an aside, I totally agree with you on vintage fur - don't tell PETA about my cosy fur coat!)

Lots of love xx

I just saw something today and thought of your fur post! People can donate old furs to Coats for Cubs through the Humane Society of America. That way, if you do run across vintage fur and don't feel right about keeping it, it can be used for wildlife animals. Win-win!

I'll be posting more details on my blog (tartdeco.blogspot.com) so I don't take up space on yours :)

Good on you - well done for picking yourself up again, and it is even better that you did it by sharing such great hair inspiration with us.
If you ever get a chance, we have some wonderful events here in the UK where Gran's fur can come out in all its glory, as it is recognised as a part of history.

oh i love it! do you think i need hot sticks if my hair is already curly?

Sammikins said...

Not to seem all stalkerish commenting on an ancient blog post, but I have those exact same curlers and I'm in awe at how flawless your curls are after the madness the hair unravels in. How did you do it! I'm ex Old-Order Mennonite so messing with my hair and making it pretty is very new and daunting and I am dying to learn your secrets on how to use these silly pink and purple hot rolls! And by the way, you are drop dead gorgeous!
