Winter Furs

Shhh.. Don't tell PETA, but I am wearing my grandmother's fur cardigan. I love this sweater it is the warmest thing, and looks wonderful on a cold and bitter day. I do believe this is the only piece of fur I own. It was also one of the only things my grandma saved from her younger years, so it truly is a treasure.

I style my hair in some victory rolls with a faux fringe on the front. I really love doing this hair style, its so simple and easy when I have not pin-curled my hair the night before.

here is what the complete outfit looked like early on that morning, when I was working. I love that my job is listing vintage dresses on Etsy! I really should count my blessings a little more often.
Well it is off with me for now, time for preschool and then to pick up Solanah for a sewing date. What fun!

its beautiful!I do have some vintage furs too.Id never buy new fur but I can justify a vintage 1,maybe cause the4 animal would have been dead by now anyway and it seems more respectful to preserve the history versus destroying it.I hate people that destroy them it seems way more of a waste of the animals life.Plus PETA is a bunch of nutballs!

I love the hairstyle. Wearing vintage fur is fine by me even though I wouldn't buy it new.

Love your fur, look gorgeous on you!!

Victory rolls are my done up hair do. Super cute! And so long as you aren't killing any new animals, that fur is fine. Especially since it has sentimental value.

Cheers!

You're so darling. I love the victory rolls.

Also, the thing about fur--if it's vintage there's no problem. It's recycling, right? So what does PETA care? You're being responsible. :)

Oh, you look so PERFECT! Your hair is just incredible!!!

I know what you mean - but when it comes to vintage fur PETA can suck it (pardon the language) I can't just sit there and let a fur go to waste, if an animal had to die (morbid) then I won't let its death be in vain...and I'll look fab doing it ;)
LOVE that sweater btw! And those victory rolls...I'm still baffled by them...I think I need a lesson or 10. hahaha

I'm a card carrying PETA member and have nothing against vintage fur. Don't lump us all together, OK?

The sweater is beautiful and so cool that it was your grandma's.

I'm an American living in Denmark and I'm not cool with the amount of new fur I see out and about, but vintage? What can you do? If it's lovely, wear it. Seems the responsible thing to do :)

I have to disagree with everyone slating PETA, they are not all nutballs...you can't lump lots of people altogether into one little pigeonhole.

I am vegan and very proud of it. ANY fur is wrong... would you wear your dead cats fur? Or your dogs? Vintage or not, a living creature was killed to make some coat that is never going to be as beautiful as it was when living. I hate that people praise vintage fur as if it's a different thing altogether. Humans have no right to wear a dead creatures fur. If anything it would be more morally justified to go out and skin some roadkill to make a coat... at least that poor animals death would have been accidental. This sounds gross huh? Yup, but that's what fur is.

If anybody really wants to 'celebrate' a dead animal, surely taxidermy would be more suitable... at least it doesn't involve the animals skin being cut off? I don't really agree with taxidermy, but I disagree with fur even more so.

Real fur, no matter how old/new it is, is grotesque. You can get perfectly good faux fur nowadays. I thought humans had evolved away from the caves and having to use every little bit of an animal that was killed. At least our very early ancestors had the excuse that they killed animals to survive. They didn't have the options we do now.

If you disagree with all of the above, that's fair enough. But surely anally electrocuting a defenseless animal has to be the biggest turn off? Just to get some tacky coat that looks the same as every other vintage loving woman's?

Luvin' your style Twila. You've definitely inspired me to move on from my quiff and start pin-curling my hair. I too have fur passed down from my mum and nan and I constantly toy with whether to wear it or not (and I'm a meat eater!!) I think the fur debate will never be resolved and it's something everyone needs to decided based on their own beliefs, not because someone else thinks it's right or wrong.

Twila,
You look lovely as usual! Love your hair.

mahuahua,

You need to get a life.

First of all, her cardigan, (not coat) isn't tacky. What IS tacky is leaving such a long, accusatory comment on her blog when she didn't really ask for it. Actually, when she said "don't tell PETA" she was basically saying, "please don't go apeshit." That is what YOUR blog is for.

Don't they have fur stores/leather stores/mcdonald's where you come from?

It's lovely, Twila. How wonderful your grandmother was to be able to preserve it and pass it on.

Muwhatswithyourname, Oh goodness.... You can't say not to pigeonhole PETA folks into the nutball group, and then go on a nutball rant. Besides, with vintage furs they didn't "anally electrocute" the little dears. They clubbed them to death. :) Isn't that just a darling notion? Also, you must not have much knowledge on the way that taxidermy is done. At least, not quality taxidermy. Quality taxidermy takes the skins and places them on a synthetic frame. Bones deteriorate, and shorten the length of time the subject may last. Not to mention you can't exactly leave all those innards to rot. Do you know how difficult it is to remove the brain, with some skinning at least?

Okay, I apologize if my rebuttal was too graphic for some. But, I mean, really. If you're going to stand for something, you should know what you're standing against. Toodles!

How refreshing that the only way you can possibly argue against my opinion (which is fine by the way) is pick holes at my user name... By the way Mahuahua is a play on words, like chihuahua but with Ma at the start as my name is Maria. Chill out, it's only an internet user name).

I never once had a go at Twila, unlike you lovely ladies having a rage at me.

And as for mentioning McDonalds BakeliteBebe... yes, there are McDonalds in the UK. I don't really see what your point is. There are paedophiles everywhere too. Doesn't mean you have to like them.

And Courtney, your patronising and arrogant manner doesn't help your point. You really didn't help your cause with it.

I think wat Maria was getting at was the ethical implications of wearing fur and how they do not fade with the age of a fur. By all means ladies wear fur if your concious allows it but do not try to comfort urselves by implying that the age of a fur somehow lessens the pain and suffering it took to become a fashion accessory

Hi Twila! I really love your hairstyle, particularly your bangs. I like how even though they are faux, they look real. I was wondering if you use a rat? I have one, but it's so large width wise that I only use it for rolling up the back of my hair. If you do use a rat, where did you get it and do you have any suggestions?

I personally love your sweater and think it's great your grandmother left you something so special. My grandma only saved a few vintage items too, so I treasure mine, just as I'm sure you treasure yours!

mahuahua,

You obviously missed my point. I was asking if there was a fur store/leather store/macdonalds where you come from so you could go and set up your soap box there instead of on a perfectly harmless blog.

Just curious, do you think this much about other articles of daily life? Cotton and diamonds have a horrible history. Most coffee is produced in clear cut rainforests by locals who are exploited. Plastic has a horrible environmental impact. Habitats are destroyed to provide you with paper and wood products. I would hate to think that out of all the bad in the world that you place all of your extremism into animal issues only. If you do, you are an elitist, and if you are this extreme with other things, it sucks to be you!

I love all my blog readers, every last one of them, no matter how they feel about fur

Haha, I love when people come and trash talk and sound like bitchy teenagers, and do it anonymously..

seriously, if you want to come talk some crap put your big girl panties on and do it with your name.. jeez.

grow up all of you who want to slander each other, this is ridiculous. I dont give a flying flip either way on the fur fence. And I dont feel my blog is a good place to attack each other.. especially anonymously.

It's Heidi thanks. I couldn't be bothered to sign up to this just to put you straight.

Oh and I am 23 and it's small-minded people that infuriate me to the point where I say shit like that. If you didn't want a debate maybe you shouldn't have advertised that you were wearing real fur when you quite obviously know it is a topic that people feel strongly about becasue you said "shush don't tell PETA" I might just tell them and hope someone throws a can of red paint over your precious cardigan.

HEIDI

Twila Jean said...

well Heidi, I dont know who you are? and I dont really care to get to know you, maybe you could stop feeling the need to comment here <3

I said it was real fur because it is, what the hell else am I supposed to say? And I made the peta comment as a joke to lighten the mood, jeez.

You care so much about dead animals, you would rather me throw out my furs.. sweet, lets throw away all the vintage furs and fill our over-filled landfills with more rubbish! hey that wont hurt the animals at all! that is totally humane :)

and when you say wearing fur vintage or not portrays the wrong message.. what would you prefer I wear FAUX? faux portrays the SAME message, that the look of fur is desirable.

Your views are great and they are yours and you can have them. keep them away from my blog if you can not speak in a calm and nice manner.

So um, are all us "fur wearers" supposed to be swayed by a bunch of attacks on our dear Twila Jean? I mean if I ask, give me a good, mature, educated, civil argument on why reusing an otherwise discarded material is a terrible thing, and I will gladly listen. But no one asked. To us you sound like a bunch of horrid, inconsiderate, crazy people, which honestly, just makes your case of "all anti fur people are not crazy" unbelievable.

Twila Jean said...

also. you are not putting me straight. I am not ignorant or stupid or small minded.

You will not sway me by verbally attacking me and making yourself out to be a militant animal activist. who is small minded here? you see things ONE WAY and one way only..

Other people have other ideas and that is OK.. you need to calm down a bit.
