The Scholar in You

The cold weather seems to be heading back this way, and with it comes spending a lot of time indoors. I need a new list of things to read, and I am at a loss. What are your favorites? They can be old, new, vintage related, not really vintage related... I just need some new inspirations.
It embarrasses me to share with you, that I have not read a book in nearly a year. To be fair I have two small children who don't allow me a lot of time, but I would like to remedy this. So please share your favorite reads with me!

On a recent thrifting trip with Solanah, I came across this little book titled, "1003 Household Hints and Work Savers To help you beat the high cost of living." It is adorable and filled with many helpful tips.

Here are a few that can be applied to today's world:

Leftover coffee need not be pour down the drain, instead pour it in ice cube trays and freeze it for use in iced coffee drinks on warm days.

For that extra something on your apple pie, sprinkle the sliced apples with a few drops of lemon juice. Dot with butter.

To prevent gloss on dark cottons and linens, Iron them on the wrong side of the fabric. This holds true silks and rayons.

To remedy water spilled on silk velvets hold a few minutes over steam escaping from tea kettle. Shake out until completely dry, brush velvet.

To make small window appear larger hang extra wide drapes above and beyond the window sills, and down to the floor.

Glamorize your closet shelves - whether for dishes, clothes, glasses, linens, or hats - by neatly covering with colorful oilcloth! This can be cleaned by merely wiping with a damp cloth.

I received my copy of Vintage Hairstyling 2nd Edition today to review it for you lovely readers of the Metropolitan Blog!
It is written by Lauren Rennells who also pens the Bobby Pin Blog. She really out did herself with the 2nd edition of her book, with huge full color images and step by step instructions. I can safely say I highly recommend this book to the novice who wants to learn more about hair styling, and likewise the advanced artist who is looking for new ideas.

Please look forward to before and after pictures on select styles from the book, as well as guest appearance posts from beginners who try the styles out for the first time.
