How Do You Do Fancy?

I never attend cocktail parties, I never go to fancy restaurants, I do not frequent grand galas. Basically put, I need not own a fancy party dress. I do own one toned-down 50s party dress that I wear to Holidays, but that is the only time it sees the light of day.
Imagine my heart break when I put on this dress and it fit like a glove. I will never have a reason to wear this lovely dress so instead I listed it for sale over on Etsy.
This has really got me thinking that I need a reason to get fancy. So tell me dear readers, what do you do to get fancy? Do you own a fabulous cocktail dress? Where do you take it? I am honestly quite curious!

I don't need a reason to get fancy, every days a dressing up day...You always have to try to look your best, you never know who you might meet...The dress is lovely...

I don't own any fancy dresses and looking at that blue beauty (being totally in my measurements!) I wish I had one. It suits you beautifully, I think you should keep it for yourself, just in case the proper occasion pops out of the blue (forgive my pun on words of colour *^v^*).

I usually get super fancy when I go to perform. But even if the husband and I are just going to a casual dinner, to a bar or to watch other burlesque performances, I'll wear a fancy cocktail dress!

Beautiful, Beautiful dress! I looks stunning on you! My friends and I make a point to get dressed up once a month and go out for drinks/dinner/the movies/out shopping/to costco... Wherever! We put on our best dresses and enjoy the night away!

I own only one truly nice cocktail dress (it might be considered evening, if it were floor length instead of below-the-knee), but I've worn it going to local theatrical plays and symphony concerts. Most people don't get terribly dressed up for those things, but I feel that it's enough of an excuse (not that I need much of an excuse, but I would feel a bit awkward wearing it to the grocery store "just because!").

I have way too many lovely cocktail dresses! But in SF, we get dressed up more frequently than other cities I feel like - any chance we get!! After the holidays are over, I feel like we have to make excuses to get dressed up, my fanciest ensembles go to VIVA. And not just one, 3 outfits per day over a 4 day weekend. If that isn't incentive enough to show off your best frocks, I don't know what is! xx.

The only time I ever wear a dress like that is to company Christmas parties! And even though they're at country clubs or swanky hotels I'm still way over dressed! There were people in jeans at the last one!

I usually get dressed up for any plays we see, or the Opera. Most people don't. The West is so casual. You could wear it to a nice restaurant.

I need a fancy dress! It's hard to find one in my size and on Jan 30th my work is holding a formal event...ahhh nothing to wear! But that dress is lovely :)

I can commiserate! When I was at university, I had several vintage party dresses that made the rounds regularly since there were always charity events and university balls, but since I graduated I just don't have any excuses to wear fancy dresses anymore, so I've either sold them off or they've been relegated to the back of my closet. I do use the excuse to dress up in fancy dresses to go to plays and ballets, though. :)

I try to overdress for any occasion. ;] Which, I might add, is certainly not difficult in Adelaide.

PS The dress looks wonderful.

I own so many cocktail dresses I'll use any excuse to wear them. I always make room for one or two in my backpack when camping. There's something magical about sitting by a campfire in your best evening wear. It really has to be your most beautiful frock to get the feeling right. It's also great for the looks you get from other campers. Nothing like going to a pit dunny in a cocktail frock! I know it's strange; but it feels wonderful.

I have a few fancy dresses and find any excuse to wear them. The blue dress is stunning on you! you could wear to weddings, or a spring time picnic. You could dress it down with a cardigan if you feel like having a princess day.

I wear them anywhere. the pub, friends parties, a meal out. You make the occasion, not the dress

I often go out to dinner at friends houses on Friday night and I totally over dress. But my friends love it and are always curious as to what concoction I will show up in. I have also been known to overdress when going to the movies on date night with my husband.

Thanks doll,

a year ago it seemed like their was a party every night to celebrate the Inauguration so I always had a reason to pull out the satin gloves. I miss that. People in DC try very hard not to get dressed up, I've noticed, so it was a treat to see everyone else make an effort. Luckily, husband and I are going to a Black-tie event later this month, so I may be pulling out the black velvet "breakfast at Tiffany's" dress, or I may use it as an excuse to find something new!

I have a few real ballgown numbers that I wear... on a Saturday night! Sometimes I just fancy dressing up. I dress them down with casual jackets or cardigans and simple shoes and jewellery, and don't give a damn when all the locals at the usual bars give me the "oh, there's that mad girl with the weird clothes again" look :)

I don't really have a lot of fancy parties/events to go to either (save the yearly Navy ball), but I still manage to have quite a stash of vintage cocktail and evening dresses! I occassionally dress up in them for certain holidays (Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc.), and every once in a blue moon when it amuses me. ;) They're just too fun to hide away forever!

Like some of your other commenters, I'll often plan outings with friends where we make it a point to get dressed up. Usually for someone's birthday or some occasion, we'll go get some dinner, then go to a fancy hotel with a dance floor or dueling pianos or something silly and fun.

I also dress up to go out to burlesque shows or any theatrical event, really. I'm usually more dressed up than the rest of the audience, but I think theatre is worth dressing up for!
