I love the 1940's and 1950's. The 40's because women did so much more than they had before and they really proved that we aren't flowers that wilt if they have too much to do. And I like the 50's because even though women had proved that they where stronger they still willingly (in most cases) went back home and became housewives.

I would like to manage to be like a mix of these women and a modern woman all at once.

Oh how fun!

My hands down favorite era is the 20s. I mean, flappers, scandal, prohibition, which led to speak easys, gangsters, jazz, glamor, fabulous hairdo's and makeup! Fabulous hair pieces and evening gowns, woman's liberation from constriction - if you dared! The Charleston!
I always feel incredibly sexy when I go with a 20s style, the cat's meow. ;)

Going to post and put a link to your site.

I do admit that I pin up my hair and dress at times like a women of the 50’s, gone modern, however I’d have to say that my favorite era of time would be that of the 1910-1920, during the Mexican Revolution. This is when women began to fight against the discrimination and began to find a place for themselves. For before the revolution they were forced to live in the shadow of they’re husbands, with their only purpose was to care for the family, marriage and be under the control of the husband. I mean don’t get me wrong I love to cook, bake and look after my family, but the fact that it was a set obligation, there were no choices, for them that was it. Where as us women can care for our family, have a career and have fun. I consider it my favorite era because from the moment the women took control of their lives, those women become writers, thinkers and role models.

I love the 40's for the hairstyles and the shapes of the clothes, but somehow the vintage patterns I always end up buying are from 1952. Hmmm. I must also love me a beautiful skirt and waspish waists.
No matter, though, it seems that people can wear what they please these days.

Thanks for a great giveaway!

I love more than one era but I am currently enamored with the forties and fifties. Earlier this month I watched; Forever, Darling with Lucie and Desi. I heart Lucie's wardrobe in that movie. Her dresses were divine!

ooo! I've been looking into getting this book for a long time! Here goes:

I've found that in each of the "vintage" decades there is something that I love. I like to mix things from different eras to create something unique and abnormal. 70's hippie stuff has a very earthy charm to it, 60's mod is cute and young and full of life, 50's dresses and gloves are elegant and feminin, 40's hats and and playsuits are strong, structured, yet soft and pretty. I love the idea of flappers (and have been reading F. Scott Fitzgerald lately to learn more), and love their carefree and jolly attitude. I love how 20's dresses are flirty and feminin, yet were shocking and bold in their time. However whenever I come across clothes from the 30's, something instantly draws me to them. It's not just the clean shilliouets(sp?), or the pretty simplicity, which is there and I love that. But I love the idea behind how women in the 30's were struggling, yet took the time to look beautiful. They were strong, and resourceful, and didn't forsake their appearance, despite troubled times. They were clever and made clothes out of whatever they could, and still looked amazing. I love that there is so much history wrapped up in vintage clothing, and while each decade was frought with individuality, the 30's were full of people being resourceful. I think it's particularly important to remember this today as the economy gets worse and worse. sure bad times come, but that doesn't mean we should let them rule us. So we can't go buy a designer gown, fine! I'm going to make one out of a bed sheet and it's going to look just a beautiful, not just because it will be tailored to me, but because I did it with my own two hands, and didn't let the world bring me down.

Dizzy Dame said...

1930s would be my favorite era, women remained classy and tough at the same time, some of the best movies came from this era,its really when hollywood hit the golden age. Fashion from the 30s to me was very sleek and damn right glamourous .

Esz said...

For me the 50's so far. Though I am only just getting into vintage and learning more about the eras. I love the style of the 50's as it's so flattering and there is so much colour.
People were 'decent' back then and wore neater clothes - none of these leggings as pants atrocities we see today. And no trackpants! At least not in public.

Right now for me it's more about the clothing, as I choose my own outlook on life which doesn't fit
with any past times.

However, another decade I am enamored with is the 1870's! That was the time of bustles and bonnets and rich fabrics. I love the whole aesthetic of that time and the shape that a bustle gives the female form.

Picking my favorite era is so hard! I would have to say the 30s-50s (I know, big span). I love the fashions of the 30s and 40s, the hair of the 30s and 40s, and the housekeeping of the 50s.

I love your blog and thanks for the giveaway.

Thank you for hosting such a lovely giveaway! That is such a difficult question, though, as I am such a history junkie. To make it easier, I will narrow it down to the 20th century. (because it is the most practical to replicate in daily dress!) The 1940s is my favourite decade of the 20th century. I love the beautiful simplicity of wartime clothing, especially. Women had to be so resourceful and make do with what they had, yet somehow they still managed to be feminine and pretty. My grandfather was in the war, and I love the old pictures of him in his handsome uniform, and of my grandmother on the homefront in her dainty southern dresses. I think women really cared about being feminine back then, and it is a lovely thing to aspire to. :)

And I love the music, and some of the styles of the 1940's. And I love the swingy skirts of the 1950's.

Congratulations on 100 followers!
I linked this post to the very top of my blog.
Anyway so here’s my entry:
My favorite era has to be the 60’s. I love the mini dresses brought upon by the mod era in which Twiggy emerged. But also, I love the simplistic masculine/feminine looks of Audrey Hepburn. But who doesn’t love Audrey Hepburn anyway? And I must say that I love Natalie Wood and Bridgette Bardot. They weren’t typical 1960’s beauty icons, but that’s what made them beautiful and different.

So there you go, my answer: The 60’s. Have a Lovely day.
Love,
Morena (withlove.morena@gmail.com)
P.S. You’re really very pretty. :) I found your blog through "Vixen Vintage" and it looks like you two had a fun time attempting at the dress. ;)

You're the BEST, Mama, for having such a great contest! Grats on the 100 followers!!

Hands down, without question, I'd take the 1940s. Despite the War, the loss, the hardships, I feel that so many did their part to band together, get creative, get thrifty, be supportive, be loving. There was less acts of entitlement and more getting down to brass tacks, so to speak. People worked hard for what they had, they were proud of their country, home and family. To come out of the Great Depression and into WWII, it built strong character. I saw it in my grandparents and they're my heroes. Ladies and gentlemen. What a time it must've been.

My favorite decade would be the 1940's for the glamorous hair styles and for Cary Grant, film noir and Dana Andrews!! :) I am a film major and films from the forties are my faves. I just found your blog and it's lovely!!

I absolutely adore the 1920s and the 1930s. The 20s were amazing, the women were breaking the molds, living a high and wild life. No one cared what people thought of them, no longer would they be restrained by the old fashioned morals of their parents and grandparents, not even the prohibition would damped their parade.

The 30's was a wonderful mixture of high fashion and a certain maturity within these beautiful risque flappers. We were also given the gift of Shirley Temple!
What kind of a world would be in without that adorable child?

My favorite era is the 1940s, hands down. Some of my favorite music, movies and of course, fashion come out of this decade. I especially love the fact that 1940s styles were practical and classic without being unfeminine or boring. I definitely love the fact that I can work the glamor of the time into my daily wardrobe without worrying too much about too much fuss and layers! ;)

I love the 1950's look as it was the epitome of femininity in my book. The hour glass figure, the house dresses, the hair, the make-up. I also love the idea of making your family's happiness and welfare your job. As much as I'd love to stay home and take care of things here, it just won't work with our budgets right now.

I just found this give-away - and your blog - thanks to another blogger who posted about it! This giveaway is so exciting! And your blog is so wonderful!

i would have to say my favourite decade for fashion is the 1940's. Although I draw inspiration from almost every decade, I feel as though the 40's translate so easily into everyday modern life, and something about the shapes, hemlines, fabrics and details from the decade remind me of wholesome Christmas movies...probably because some of my favourite holiday films are from, or set in the decade. Christmas being one of my favourite times of year, there's nothing I like more than throwing something on in the morning that reminds me of the feeling I get during the holidays!! :)

I'm off to link to your giveaway on my blog! Thanks again for putting this give away together!! :D

I really love the 40's...not only for the fashion but for the whole romance/military part of it. I know the saying "war is hell" is all too true, but I love the whole idea of how the men (and some women too!) went off to war leaving their significant others behind, how good those troops looked in their uniforms, the backdrop of the USO clubs and the music, you know what I mean?

I love the late 1940's and all of the 1950's, mainly because I think I look cute in the clothing. But beyond that, I pine for the lost art of glamour and style, which I feel was embodied in those decades.

In addition there appears to be a general happiness in the 1950's which can be seen in the vibrant colors and funny advertisements of the period.

Hi! I found your blog through Casey's Musings. I've wanted this amazing book for a long time, so I'm terribly excited to see you offering it as a giveaway. :)

My favorite era is the 1940's. I'm a pretty hardcore fan, too. I wear my hair in the "roll" style everyday, with variations on the theme to mix it up a bit. Classic films from the 1940s are my favorite entertainment. Hedy Lamarr, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Alice Faye and Lana Turner are some my favorite actresses. The clothing of the forties is a constant inspiration to me. I'm an avid sewer and am finishing up a bright yellow shirt dress today created from a vintage 40s pattern.

Anyway, thanks so much for the giveaway! I'm going to tweet your giveaway on Twitter. My name on there is NoirGirl.

Its hard to choose, because I love the 20s but I have to say, at the moment I am loving the late 30s/early 40s fashion scene. I would have to say my favorite era would be the late twenties to early thirties, there was a quiet after the great war, prosperity and women were still ladies as well as revving up for equality, the best of both. I love the style of the time and am trying to bring back the style of the thirties to fifties hats ( i cant pull off a cloche) in my city of london. While saying to this that I am intrigued by the late victorian and regency period as well, trying to alter dresses for my everyday, while some of the time wearing my victorian dress to the park scaring many of the locals I'm sure. All this a side product of being a performance designer. By this, hopefully little by little introducing the term 'lady' into 'cool' circles again.

Wow!! Love the blog...just got introduced to it!! It's truly a gem. My fave decade would have to be the 40's...I hate to sound like I'm repeating anyone, but so much happened that really changed EVERYTHING. Men went off to war, women got out there into those factories & worked their butts off! People wanted to be conservative because of rationing, but so many beautiful things were still created! I can't say it's a true comparison by any measure...but my husband just joined the Army...I'm living without him...taking care of the homestead alone. So, I think I am identifying a little more with the decade itself, and especially with women like my grandmother that had loved ones fighting a far-off war.

Christine said...

My favorite era is the very late 1930's and very early 1940s. The fashion of this era was so creative, particularly during the war years. Rationing meant that women had to do without frills, long skirts, and many other (more necessary) things. They found new ways to use and shape fabric that made use of every inch they had to work with. A very ingenious era.

Hmmmm... that's a bit of a tough question for me. Although I love the style of the 40s and 50s, it's something that after some trying out I realized just didn't work for me - I'm always running out of the house with half-dry hair and clashing purse and shoes. As much as I may love those pristine, ladylike looks, they'll never look quite right on me because I can't bring myself to make the time to do them right. And although I think it's a noble ambition to aspire to being a lady, it is just not me.

The 1920s and 1960s, however, I can get behind both the fashion and the attitude of. Although original 20s clothes aren't practical for everyday (too fragile and irreplaceable), I love finding modern pieces that emulate the style - for example, I admit I've completely gone in for the hairpiece trend lately. I also love my cloche hat, and my drop-waist LBD makes an appearance nearly every weekend.

My 60s mod dresses are great (particularly the few in natural fibers!). I can ride my bike in them, and they usually stand up great to trips through the washing machine.

Ah, I have been reading this from work all week and am finally in front of my my computer at home and can comment...

Well, my favourite vintage era is the early to mid forties, something that started back when I was seven and my Grandmother moved back to England to live with us (she was in England during the war and me about life there at that time. She married a naval engineer – my grandfather – who fought in the war, but sadly I never met him), via school trips to the War museum in London (and one I can't remember, but it had a simulated air raid shelter during a bombing which was really effectively scary) and an interest in the lives (including the clothes, home lives, social ideas) of ordinary people during second world war, more so than the dates and politicians names etc... and it is something I have only fairly realised is actually available to me in clothing, home stuff, the strong graphic design, swing dancing lessons, local big bands playing etc, as for so long I thought it was all way to expensive and very much out of my league – and also hard to find here in Australia! The internet has changed all that :) It has been amazing to find this whole other world out there, and blogging and blogs have been the main reason for that.

My favorite is the 1940's because women were so classy and they always looked good. I also like how women were actually womanly in the sense that they dressed feminine and has curves, unlike today. The music(big band, swing) is the best and the dances are fabulous.

Hiya, I am new to your blog but I love it. I love all things old and wonderful. I think I first fell in love with the 20's the flappers and finger waves. I got into swing dancing and Charleston, and I fell in love with the style of the 40's and 50's I have always liked oldies music and I guess just generally love anything old. I also found out that my great grandfather could cut quite a rug back in the 20's and my grandmother also was quite the swing dancer in her day. It's a legacy. :) It was a way for me to connect with them, which was really cool.
I love that women were strong but still feminine back then.

Woooo...a book about haistyles...something I have became quite obcessed with over the last few weeks....
Actually...that´s the hardest question ever...My favorite decade changes with the day...I can´t pick one. I love the 20´ever since I was a child. There is a misterious elegance about it, and the women in there were so much different from what they had been the previous decades. I love the 40´s silluette. The 50´s charm. And then I love the 60´s as well, the short joyful dresses....lovely. And then ...how can one not have a weakness for the colourful 70´s??
So yeah, I didn´t really answer your question. But it is really changeable for me, I just love to go through the decades according to my mood...
So I guess I actually like to live on a decade when I can go back and experience all the previous ones!
But if I had to choose a decade to live in...I think I would go for the 20´s. Beautiful clothes and accesories, women were getting into all sorts of cultural circles as never before and the dances.....oh my god, the dances!!!!!!!! How come charleston is hardly ever danced anymore????

Also love the 50s for the full skirts and pearls and our lovely marilyn. When women were prized for their curves instead of being too skinny!

I'm so glad you've reached your 100 and get to do this give away! I've been eyeing that hairstyling book through Bobby Pin Blog for weeks now!

I've always been a 40s and 50s fan. Clothes were made to fit women, the way women really were, and enhance everything that is beautiful about them. In our modern society most people don't take the time to really consider how they're dressed, or how their hair and make up is done before leaving the house. I think a huge party of our culture's appearance issues stem from the clothing that is pushed on people as what should be the norm and what is beautiful. In the 40s and 50s, women took care of themselves, their husbands, and their families and were proud of their lives and fulfilled in doing so. I can only hope to be so lucky in my life!

I prefer the 50's because of the elegant silhouettes of the dresses; the nipped-in waist, accentuated with a full skirt underneath... It's so sophisticated!

Ha, it would be wonderful to win this giveaway. I've been trying to straighten my hair less, and let it have its naturally waves and curls. A lovely book like this, however, would give me so much more ideas and inspiration to try out different hairstyles - without having to destroy my hair with nasty, artificial heat!

The early teens are just so elegant - I love the long movie starlet hair, the white dresses and tiny "rosebud" lips. But then the 60's are pretty sweet too! ;)

I love the 40's the most because of the hat's and the fact that no matter now bad things got no self respecting lady would leave the house without one!

Oh, I'm a real sucker for the 40's. Swing dancing would have been my main attraction, and I love the patriotism!

At the moment I really love the 40s. The amazing hairstyles are my main attraction (I have actually started putting my hair in pincurls as often as I have the time to), although I also love the elegant fashions of the 40s and the music.

I love the '50's, especially for the clothing styles. I love how they emphasis waistlines and how the skirts can be so full. I really think that the 50's were the peak of fashion. I'm new to the whole blogging thing, but yours is lovely.

Oh wow, really hard to choose! I'd say my favorite era for CLOTHING and HAIR only would have to be the early 40s. I think we tend to romanticize the era and I wouldn't have wanted to lived through the hardships of it, especially for women. My other favorite era is the 70s because it is very nostalgic for me and it felt free to be alive then. I think it was one of the last great eras.

I'd rather not post my email on a public blog because spam bots send out spiders to pick up that sort of information. I think you know how to get in touch with me through Etsy...

Hands down 1940's. I'm a huge film noir fan and I wish I looked like Rita Hayworth and had the wise-crackin' personality of Barbara Stanwyck.

Congratulations and thanks for this wonderful give-away!

This may sound silly but, although I am absolutely besotted with the 1940s, my favourite decade is the current one! So many choices (in terms of fashion and in terms of lifestyles). I feel very lucky to be living in the here and now, with the ability to look back over history and be able to pick and choose elements from various decades of the past, while also being able to enjoy and celebrate the fruits of our foremothers' labours!

This has to be the greatest giveaway! My favorite decade is the 50s, of course. The hair was amazing, well put together and fun. There was such an air of American confidence then too. Not to mention late 50s car are the most!

My favorite era hands down is the 50's!!! Rockabilly was inspired by all era's, but I feel the 50's were the most influential. The woman were gorgeous, and their style is being replicated to this day! Those were the days when a woman was a classy woman. I love it!

Hi!
Thank you for doing this giveaway!
I would have to say my favorite era is the roaring '20s. I absolutely love everything from that era. Like the fashion at the time with the flappers, the hats, headpieces, hairstyles. I really like seeing black & white photos of the women of this era because their makeup greatly enhance their features along with the fashion and this easily seen in the Ziegfield Follies. The dancing and music of this era was just perfect. This might seem unusual that a 17 yr old has so much interest and intrigue in vintage stuff. Though I have to admit I am also a fan of the '80s as well. Well thank you again for doing this.

You can contact me at bebopbabe@sbcglobal.net and my name is brenda

This book looks so cool! I like the early sixties because women still were dressing very classy but fashion choices were becoming a bit more bold and daring, which culminated with the hippie fashions of the late sixties. I love the shapely wiggle dresses and the beatnik look.

The 50's, hands down! Love the feminine styles (clothing, hair and accessories), love that the ladies looked so classy even when they were being vixens. Not like today when nothing is left to the imagination!

And how great to afford to live on one income! Oh what a world we now live in!

I'd love to be the lucky winner of this awesome book! My contact email is: oldbagvintage@yahoo.com, or convo me in my etsy shop (oldbagvintage). Thanks so much!
