FOILED!

So, I have been working on a top secret project.
I was in contact with a woman up north clearing her Aunt's estate out, and she wanted me to come up and buy the LOT of 40s and 50s clothes.
I have been so excited about this I could hardly contain myself, as it was also a good excuse for me and the hubby to take a day trip together without the kids.
I have been asking her for days what kind of price she is trying to get for each item and/or what the whole lot would cost me.
I finally get her response on price a few minutes ago, and she wants $60.00 a piece?!??! on handmade no designer items, the designer stuff would be more.
$60.00 at an estate sale?! Are you kidding me?!!!!

So I email this poor woman back, saying that I would not be able to make it. I can buy great 40s dresses at the Vintage Stores in my town for 1/3 the price, I could not justify a 2 hour drive and that massive of an expense.
I would have virtually no mark up to be able to sell each item.

This sale is in a tiny town in the middle of no where, who does this woman think will pay those prices?
I have NEVER in my life seen those prices at an estate sale on clothes.
The most I have ever paid for a 40s dress at an estate sale is $20.

Am I alone on this?
We live in a vintage obsessed area, so the prices are kind of high, but you can still easily buy a 40s dress for $30, or a 50s dress for $20 in local area stores.

I am floored, and my weekend is a total bummer now.

Wow--$60 each? That is just far too high; they'd have to be really, really special dresses for me to even be tempted! ;) How disappointing! :(

Very disappointing. Her prices are way out of line. Sounds like she's trying to get retail for them. But keep on her, maybe she will change her mind and lower the prices.

totally ridiculous - if you were buying them for you, yeah, maybe - but wholesale? I thinks not.

That's the price I've been seeing lately at the few estate sales so far this year. $60 for a stained dress with huge holes. I feel your pain.

I stopped pursuing stuff like this, because I was always getting nutty old ladies who wanted astounding prices for items that weren't worth that much! I have enough stuff, anyway... if I happen to come across certain items, fine. I just can't be bothered to deal with that any more. It's happened way too much.

Ohh thats such a shame!, We have the same problem at our op shops here in New Zealand.

I agree...you did the right thing in turning her down but telling her why. I would check back with her in a few weeks and see if she changes her tune...when no one local is buying her stuff that is. ;-)

Recently came across your blog! As an ex-dealer (who still dabbles) I can honestly say those are outrageous prices, and she will be stuck with the whole lot if she doesn't wise up. Even here where prices are very high in the vintage shops and flea markets (you're *so* lucky to find 40's dresses for $30, 50's for $20 in vintage shops, those are the prices we paid here in the 1980's!) you wouldn't find a dealer paying what she's asking. They might pay that for a pristine condition high-end & well-known designer, but would only choose a few pieces leaving the seller to deal with the rest.
Cheers!

Ooooh that lady is a kookoo bird. I live in the San Francisco area and our vintage is crazy picked over (thrift stores and estate sales)...but even I have never heard of someone asking $60 PER item! Yipes!

I love your blog. I just stumbled upon it somehow. I'm a fellow vintage lover (although I'm more of a 60s girlie....my crazy hair would never pin curl like your lucious locks, so I have mad hair envy!)
