Our offer went through on the 1940s farmhouse we loved with all of our hearts. But sadly the bank owned property would not be repaired before we closed, so with the loan we are using we wont be getting this home. I cried for hours this morning upon hearing the news. It was the perfect old house in downtown, and the only house in downtown for sale.
So, the only other house on our list is in the suburbs, and it is not really a nice old farmhouse. It's an ugly 70s ranch. In the suburbs. Yeah...
This is where you lovely readers come in! What are your thoughts and ideas on dressing up an ugly 70s ranch, to be a little more vintage, say an atomic 50s ranch?
I would love to hear what you guys think. I could really use some cheering up, so fire away!

I'm sorry doll :(
Hmmm, remove the shag carpeting!? lol
Keep the faith things happen for reasons.
I'm so sorry to hear your news.
As far as the ranch, I'd definitely get a subscription to www.atomic-ranch.com
Ok ok. So I had pretty much the EXACT situation! My husband and I looked for about a year for a home. Our search started in the city (Chicago that is) but we decided that a cookie cutter condo was not our style and we wanted to be closer to our families in the far suburbs. So, we started looking down in our hometown and around it. I DREAMED of a bungalow and we had actually found this pretty little one with an amazing backyard! It too was bank owned. We put in our bid and waited....and waited....and waited. It neared closer to our wedding and we needed a house so we had to drop our bid. Instead we bought a 1993 suburban ranch in a neighborhood that has *gasp* a gazillion other 1993 suburban ranches. I was sort of upset. It had no character and now uniqueness. But, 6 months later (and a whole lot of fixing up cosmetics), I love our home. It isn't the vintage bungalow I dreamed of dressing in art deco pieces and little lace curtains but it is a beautiful home and I wouldn't trade it for anything!
BombshellShocked, Oh my god! Never heard of that site but I am so subscribing! That is fantastic!
Sorry to hear that about the house
But with the right details and style you can make a 70s home look great I bet!
Paint it Pink! hahahahaha No, really. What's more Atomic 50s than a cadillac pink house? ;)
So sorry!
Definitely with clean lines and a 50s color palette you can make it perfect and so your own! It'll be even better than the first house because it'll be cute entirely because of you - your work of art.

Dont be put off- I am looking at a unit built in 1972 (never thought that I'd be looking at that era). But it has an awesome floor plan with lots of potential so once the gross carpet is gone, floorboards polished and a redo on the kitchen I think it will come up a treat! Sometimes just getting into the market is the best step I think. Good luck whatever happens!
If you have pictures of the ranchy house, it'd be easier to help ya fix it up something nice. :]
First, I'm really terribly sorry to hear about the house. I've had an offer or two fall through before, and it just sucks. As for settling ... don't settle. That doesn't mean the 70's ranch IS settling, only you guys know that. I love my 1934 home... in Oregon City. (But it IS in Oregon City.) If I were doing it today, I'd have held out for a home closer into town. If the house doesn't feel "right" don't do it. If you walk in, and feel comfortable and have a "yeah, I can work with this!" feeling that is positive, then go for it. Should you decide to wait - honestly, there's so much inventory out there, that something else is bound to come along that will be amazing.
I am really sorry that it didn't work out for you but its true, things happen for a reason.
About the 70's ranch, I could seriously help you out! I would love to help you! Once I see it, the ideas will start flowing.
All I now is I´m my mothers daughter and she says almost any house can be made to look good ! All the best in your new endeavours !
