The fella and I embarked on a quick weekend jaunt to the coast in celebration of our 2nd anniversary this weekend. At the beach there are always tons of little thrift shops and "antique" stores to peruse.
I managed to nab a really cute 1938 REDBOOK magazine, which is filled with short stories and novelettes.
The thing that caught my eye is the ridiculous Adverts. They are so comical, and sometimes blatantly rude.
here is one about "under arm spot" odor. Because, seriously darling, if you have stinky pits, NO man will ever love you. ever. Haha.
Of course there are a few more, ranging from "you have horrible breath and NO friends use listerine!" to "dainty" ads about Tampax Tampons. I will have to post a few more later when I have the time, for now off to work!

Hehe, I love vintage ads. You should bring it over sometime ;)
What a funny find! I feel so sorry for that poor girl!
Thanks doll,
The Glamorous Housewife
oh these are hilarious! you wouldn't get away with these now in our PC society. I have seen some shocking ones for feminine hygiene, and loosing weight by consuming tapeworms....um no thanks!
hahahaha.
So freakin' funny.
I don't know though, this whole recent "Have a happy period" (hellooooo delusional!)
campaign makes me want to punch the TV, so I am not sure which one is worse!
Oh my, vintage ads are so funny! I recently found a 1949 issue of the Ladies Home Journal and there is a horribly cruel ad for Listerine which has a four paragraph long 'story' (with the accompanying illustration of a lonely girl sitting on a bench with a caption something like "Sally doesn't love here anymore...") about a girl who was on the verge of proposal from 'Harry', but suddenly, for no reason at all, he started to drift away. This was clearly because she had bad breath, but no one had the heart to tell her. It was pretty cruel!
Have you ever been to http://www.lileks.com? It has lots of funny vintage ads and silly sarcastic narrative from the website's author - I have spent many hours giggling away at the craziness of retro advertising!
Oh vintage ads are just the greatest. This one is so entertaining, thanks for sharing ;)
I think I would prefer the dainty Tampax ads rather than some of the ones the show today. Less information is better sometimes ;)
haha, that's wonderful!
there is a really good book called 'think pink' that is filled with ads like that and commentary about how advertisers meddled with women in the 30s/40s/50s.
